News, Reviews and Snippets
Bali Beckons Designer
Nadya has a fashion philosophy that transcends the contrived. It is
clean and simple in line, basic in approach. It's the fabric that
speaks to you, in a way that makes what she designs
irresistible......The fabric that was woven has a story to tell. There
was magic in the coloring, uniqueness in the individual look of each
piece woven (since it is all done by hand, no two pieces are
alike).....Mosaic prints, which look different because each material
takes the dye differently, create a montage of feeling that can be
mixed and matched, to give your wardrobe ongoing outfits that never go
out of style. Your own sense of self-expression comes out as you build
a Nadya wardrobe. If you have never owned a piece of the Nadya
collection, you should start with one of her jackets. Simple in design,
its uniqueness is in its wearability. - Chicago Woman Today, Sandy Kagan
Bali Evokes Exotic Nadya
Designs
The clothes come from halfway around the world, shipped on a Third
World airline packed in cigarette crates. They are headed for Chicago,
Los Angeles and New York -- and about 14,000 loyal customers who
carefully mark the designer's twice-a-year showings on their calendars.
They know when she's coming because she sent them a post card from her
home in the rice fields....The clothes she designs evoke all of the
elements of her life on Bali, she says. The color, the energy; the
freedom... and the strong challenge to "some of our conditioned
responses to things." - Flair Magazine, Anna Madrzyk
Nadya's Bali Creations
Awash in Island Colors
The clothes Nadya makes.....draws customers who enjoy standing out in a
crowd and who like to tell the world a little bit about themselves
through their clothing. Her customers range in age from 13 to 75, but
all of them are "interested in communicating with the world around
them", said Nadya.....In New York, she has a loyal following among
theater people, writers and editors. In Los Angeles, those in the film
and TV business respond best to her clothes. Nadya has seen her clothes
turn up on TV shows including "Babes," "Family Ties," and "General
Hospital." In addition, to Ellen Burstyn, Nadya has sold clothes to
Susan Ruttan of "L.A. Law," Tuesday Weld and ballerina Natalia
Makarova...Her clothing is one-of-a-kind because its made by
hand....Most of Nadya's clothes don't come in sizes. Many of her styles
are easy-fitting and rely on drawstrings, ties or elastic. Quilted
wrap-around belts pull tops and bottoms together and give the outfit an
identifiable Nadya look.....At one point she sold the clothes to
Bergdorf Goodman in New York, but decided that she preferred working
with clients directly. "I love the direct input," Nadya said. "People
make suggestions all the time. The fun part for me is coming back here,
getting a shot of adrenaline and going back to my island." - The Chicago Sun-Times, Lisbeth Levine
Thinking Globally,
Selling Locally
For many entrepreneurs, life on the road means lonely nights in dreary
hotel rooms. But not for Nadya, an American designer who lives and
works in Bali but sells her one-of-a-kind clothes in hotel rooms across
the United States....At a recent showing at the Mayflower hotel, dozens
of shoppers arrived to try on clothes....within an hour, three fashion
models, a photo researcher, an attorney and a columnist (yes, I bought
a jacket) were among the shoppers.... "In the beginning, the people in
Bali thought I must have been kind of an eccentric and generous person
because they thought the clothing was so crazy...Now they look at it
with more interest and are actually wearing it themselves." - The Los Angeles Times, Jane Applegate
